MATHLETE'S
QUEST
Are you ready for the challenge? Design a shape with an area of 24 square units and a perimeter of 22 units. If this seems difficult, please consult with an 8-year old, 3rd grader from the South Kingstown‚ Third Grade "Mathlete Quest"‚ team roster.
The first ever South Kingstown Mathlete's Quest Competition was an overwhelming success with 75 third graders from all four elementary schools demonstrating their math competency. A surprisingly high number of ambitious math students completed applications in order to be selected as a Mathlete competitor. After the selection process, the students were combined into mixed teams allowing students from Matunuck, Peace Dale, Wakefield, and West Kingston to work together in the academic-decathlon-style competition. The first four rounds of rapid-fire questions went quickly, yet smoothly as teams shared their responses on whiteboards to the audience of family, friends, teachers, and judges. The competition allowed the students to showcase what they have been learning in math during their first, formative years in
elementary school.
The final round - and tie-breaking round - had students working on an extended problem solving task. As luck would have it, the "Lime Green" team won the competition by a mere two points. The "Cranberry Team" was the first runner-up
The math coaches, Mariann Hayward, Kim Mather, and Marty Waterson congratulated all of these brave participants and a thanked all of the parents, guardians, extended family members, teachers, and community members who came to support the Mathletes. Additionally, the math coaches noted how hard all students in our elementary schools are working to achieve math success!
