8430    Foreign Exchange Programs

The South Kingstown School Committee recognizes the many values of recognized foreign exchange programs. However, as a result of a proliferation of these programs, it is necessary to adopt certain guidelines to prevent abuses from occurring. As a result, the following guidelines shall be followed:

1.      Exchange students will be accepted only from programs on the approved list of the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel.

2.      In order to plan properly for these students, written notification to the school department concerning expected student placements must be made at least three months prior to the opening of school.

3.      All exchange students must be certified to be proficient in the English language so that they can receive all the benefits of their education.

4.      No more than two students from any exchange program will be accepted for any school year, and no more than a total of four exchange students will be accepted for a single school year.

5.      All approved exchange programs will receive a copy of this policy, in writing, immediately following adoption of this policy.
