General: The Superintendent shall ordinarily assign students to the school designated for the student's residence area. The superintendent may make exceptions...
A. to equalize classroom loads
B. to effect economics in transportation
C. to provide special education for physically or mentally handicapped children
The superintendent shall, for sufficient reasons, have power to transfer children from one school to another.
Residence Changes Within the School District: A student whose place of residence changes within the South Kingstown School District, making a change of local schools possible, may have the following choice of school attendance:
A. Either the student may change school attendance from the school of former residence to the appropriate school for the new residence,
B. Or, the student may continue his education in the school of his former residence until the end of the regular academic year, with his parents or guardian assuming the obligation for the student's transportation.
C. No student may change schools of attendance before changing residence within the South Kingstown School District.
Legal Place of Residence: The legal residence of the child shall be the same as the legal residence of the child's parents. Where the parents of a child are living separate and apart, the legal residence of the child shall be that of the parent who has, pursuant to a valid order of a court, been granted legal custody of the child or if there has been no court order entered determining legal custody, the legal residence of the child shall be that of the parent with whom the child makes his home for the greater part of the calendar year. Where a legal guardian for the child has been appointed, the residence of the child shall be that of the guardian.
Attendance of South Kingstown Residents to Schools Outside the School District: Whenever the school committee finds that South Kingstown does not provide specialized education facilities for a child of school age, the superintendent shall be instructed to arrange for the attendance of such a child at an appropriate school outside of the school district, and shall pay tuition and transportation charges out of school department operating funds.
