8125    Student Promotion/Placement/Retention
Students/General

Because the public schools of the district are dedicated to the best total and continuous development of each pupil enrolled, the professional staff is expected to place pupils at the grade level best suited to them academically, socially and emotionally.

Pupils will normally progress from grade to grade. Exceptions may be made when, in the judgment of the professional staff, such exceptions are in the best educational interest of the pupils involved. Exceptions will always be made after prior notification and explanation to each pupil's parents, but the final decision will rest with the school authorities.

No student may be retained more than two (2) years in grades K-6. The only exception to this rule would be that the physical, emotional or social growth of the young person is such that all parties agree a third or more years may be profitable.

Occasionally a special grade placement seems to be in the best interest of a child. A "placement" is any advancement to the next grade level that is not an academic promotion. Placements may occur for academic, social, or other individual considerations.

A child's assignment using this policy must be accompanied by an educational planning form. This plan will be developed in June during the current school year. The current teacher in consultation with the building principal, resource teacher and the child's receiving teacher, when possible, should be involved in the plan. The plan will be implemented and evaluated by the receiving teacher on a quarterly basis.

Retention and Promotion is handled on a case by case basis.

Retention is handled in the following manner:

a)      a meeting and general agreement with all the student's teachers including guidance counselor and principal.

b)      a meeting with parent and usual agreement.

c)      a final discussion on the merits of the individual's retention with the parent, teachers, guidance counselor, department head, administrative assistant and principal and development of a special program.

d)      final decision rests with the school administration.

The following are the requirements for students of South Kingstown High School in regards to advancement in grade classification:

To advance to Sophomore status: students must have attended high school for a minimum of one year, and must have accumulated at least 4 credits towards graduation.

To advance to Junior status: students must have attended high school for a minimum of two years and must have accumulated at least 9 credits toward graduation.

To advance to Senior status: students must have attended high school for a minimum of three years and must have accumulated at least 13.5 credits towards graduation.

Students wishing to advance in grade classification because of early graduation or other circumstances may apply, in writing, to the Principal for special consideration.  In addition, if in the opinion of the Principal, the above classification system is not in the best interest of a particular student, an exception to these guidelines may be granted.

It should also be recognized that regardless of any grade classification system, students shall not graduate unless all diploma requirements have been met.
