5405    Interview Process and Procedures for Selection of Personnel
Personnel/Recruitment and Selection

Screening Committee

Screening personnel using a team approach is the accepted procedure for South Kingstown.~ Teams should not be so large as to overwhelm the applicant. It is important that screening teams are balanced to reflect the diverse makeup of the community, and administrators should make all reasonable efforts to so constitute their teams.  Additionally, teams should have teacher, parent, and administrative representation. The administrator working with each screening team shall assure that appropriate training and information is provided so that screening and interviews are conducted effectively, efficiently and in accordance with relevant requirements.

For staff positions, the principal or other administrator may join the screening committee during the paper screening and may wish to be a part of the interviewing process.~ However, he/she may elect to have the committee operate independently and refer the best candidates to his/her office for a final screening. The administrator will then recommend one or more candidate(s) to the superintendent for approval and recommendation to the school committee.  An administrator shall serve on all administrative screening committees.

Second Level Interviews

The Superintendent shall interview from the applicant pool those candidates whom the superintendent determines merit further consideration. The superintendent need not be bound by the recommendations of the screening committee.

Superintendent's Action

In accordance with RI Gen. Laws § 16-2-11(7) (General Powers and Duties of Superintendent) the Superintendent shall make the appointment with the consent of the School Committee. The superintendent submits to the School Committee for consent:

·       For certified teachers, the prospective employee's vita and certification.
·       For non-certified employees, the prospective employee’s vita or completed application.
Official employment begins the day after School Committee approval unless School Committee action confirms another date.
There shall be no discrimination against any employee or applicant by any reason protected by policy.
