5120    Extended Leaves of Absence

All requests for extended leaves will be filed with the Superintendent in writing by May 20th.  Personnel on leave will be returned to their original position or another similar position in accordance with the conditions of their collective bargaining agreement, where applicable.  Leaves must be for at least one (1) school year duration and must coincide with the school year.  Requests for such leave will be filed with the Superintendent in writing by May 20th.  The superintendent and the school committee may, at their sole discretion, waive the May 20th deadline in the granting of leaves.  In addition on recommendation of the Superintendent, the School Committee may grant a second year of leave without pay.  Extending a leave requires approval of the Superintendent and the School Committee.  All other conditions and terms regarding leaves, which are a part of the collective bargaining unit, apply.  This language does not limit the rights of employees to seek leaves under the Family Medical Leave Act, or other rights to leave under law, whose provisions and rights may exceed those under this policy.
