School Committee Professional Development:: Tony Mega shared some of his experiences at a recent school board conference. He spoke about other committees refining their concept of governance and differentiating that from the role of their employees. He also related how some other communities share their vision of education with the community and receive valuable feedback which helps committee members develop a more specific concept of the education they want to provide for their students.

Universal School Breakfast in the Middle Schools: The committee approved (6-0-0) the implementation of a pilot breakfast program beginning in 2007. Our data suggests the consumption of breakfast by all groups of children in SK falls dramatically at the middle school level. Studies have also shown that breakfast does improve school performance, behavior and attention to tasks. The committee will re-evaluate this program at the end of its first year. The committee also thanks Mr. Geoffrey Levy of the Wakefield Mall for generously offering to fund this project.

Peacedale Elementary School Appointment: The school committee unanimously approved the appointment of Jennifer Enck as the assistant principal at Peacedale. She is a graduate of South Kingstown’s schools and has taught in our district since 1997.

School Committee Retreat: The committee discussed issues and procedures for their upcoming day long retreat at URI University Club on July 13, 2007. The committee will receive material and data prior to the retreat which will be facilitated by Barbara Miller. Administrators and other key district employees have been invited to participate. The purpose of the meeting is to develop school committee goals for the coming year.
