SKAN[Marker]

(SK Action Notes)
May 22, 2007

SKAN is issued by the South Kingstown School Committee to inform staff members and interested others of matters discussed and actions taken by the School Committee at its most recent meeting. SKAN does not represent meeting minutes.  Minutes are available at http://www.skschools.net

Math Coaching:  Kim Mathers and Maryann Hayward, our District’s math coaches, described their integral partnership with our elementary school teachers which has resulted in significantly higher scores on math assessments. They utilize the NECAP data to direct instruction.  They also use common language to ensure equitability of instruction.  Our math curriculum supports the development of skills to investigate problems, employs a rubric to self assess, constructs explanations and helps our students share what they have learned.  Thanks to Kim, Maryann and all our elementary school teachers for a successful partnership.

Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS): Our principals, Michelle Little and Deb Zepp, led a discussion of the positive impact of this program in their schools.  Using a database of School Wide Information System (SWIS) which tabulates information on problem behavior in the schools, they can pinpoint the times and areas which need stronger behavioral interventions.  This model of intervention teaches and acknowledges behavioral expectations from keeping the restrooms clean to respecting others. Our staff is trained to model the behaviors they expect from our students and are encouraged to provide five to seven encouraging comments for each redirection they provide.  The Department of Education has commended Matunuck and Wakefield school for their “strong implementation” of this program.   Peace Dale, West Kingston, and the High School will join PBIS in September.

Augusta Hazard Scholarship: The school committee unanimously approved 17 scholarships for deserving SK Seniors who will be attending college in the fall. The committee will consider renewing current scholarships at a future meeting.

Accountability Subcommittee:   The subcommittee presented a Balanced Report Card which includes achievement data in a variety of areas measuring not only academic achievement but also school satisfaction, safety, personalization, school engagement and the rigor of our curriculum.  Data is disaggregated for our IEP and Free and Reduced Lunch populations.  We are also developing a year by year trend line for the data and a comparison with our cohort school systems (Cumberland, Chariho and North Kingstown). This information will be used by the committee to set its goals in our summer retreat.

Resignation:  The committee regretfully acknowledged the resignation of member Anne Whaley.  Anne has been a vital force in education in South Kingstown for many years in a variety of capacities.  She is a tireless advocate for a quality education for all children.  We will miss you Anne.  Thanks for your hard and worthy work for all these years.
