SKAN (SK Action Notes) is issued by the South Kingstown School Committee
to inform staff members and interested others of matters discussed and
actions taken by the School Committee at its most recent meeting. SKAN
does not represent meeting minutes.
Key Discussions
- The school committee proposed four goals for 2006-2007: 1.
Continue with development of accountability structure; 2. Improve
district-wide communications, 3. Improve high school success for all
students; 4. Support innovative strategies for student achievement.
Administrator review of the goals focused on implementation strategies and
resource implications. The goals will ultimately be incorporated into the
district strategic plan and the budget development process.
- Review of FY07-08 Capital Projects: SKHS general improvements,
roof replacement for Hazard school, CCMS replacement flooring and upgrades
to AC units; Wakefield ES bathroom renovations and new River Classroom;
administration & district wide improvements cover flooring
replacement, security upgrades and lighting upgrades for total expenditure
of $1M.
The FY07-08 5200 line includes: telecommunications program, computer
replacement for SKHS computer lab, administrative and other computer
equity replacement per district technology plan, network hardware,
painting, and vehicle replacement for total expenditures of $340,000.
Expenditures for FY07-08 reflect a decrease from this year’s budgeted
expenses due to recent budget limitations passed by the state legislature.
- Candidate Instruction: The school committee will host a work
session on September 16 at 9:00 AM for
school committee candidates (location TBA). The purpose is to support
citizen involvement in the electoral process.
The agenda includes: school committee roles & responsibilities as
defined in bylaws, state law, and Town Charter;
Who’s Who in the SK Administration; relationships with various levels of
governments; and informational resources.
Superintendent’s Report
- 2006–2007 Capital Projects Update: General renovations are on
time for the high school (doors, flooring, and removal of underground oil
tank removal), Curtis Corner (water tank replacement), W. Kingston roof
replacement, and Peace Dale elementary school flooring replacements.
- Kindergarten: Student registrations appear to be around 250
students district-wide. K class sizes will range from 18-21 students.
Based on two years of data, there is a suggestion of an upward trend in
student enrollments.
- Transportation: The district is working closely with the bus
company to insure a smooth opening to school. New communication
strategies are in place for parents.
Official School Committee Actions
