Ecosystems:
The first installment of the 2008-2009 Stingray science curriculum is a study of ecosystems. This study involves the examination of organisms interacting with their environment and vice-versa. The culminating activity for this unit is to construct a terrarium/aquarium combination that will, if taken care of correctly, illustrate the complex interactions in a given environment. Students will take home their creations in order to have both a memento and a functioning and ongoing science discovery center.
Measuring time: The remainder of our keeping time investigation went well with the culminating activities including students making an accurate one minute timer, as well as a fully functional clock escapement.
Magnets and Motors: Our magnets and motors investigation started with an introduction to several antique pieces including a restored 1896 General Electric® fan, authentic/functional World War II field phones, and a restored 1913 magneto-ignition gasoline powered self propelled lawn mower. These items not only act as a hook to pique interest, but also show historical links as to how magnetism and motors have affected our lives, and the progression of science. Some of our investigations thus far have included, or will include: - Understanding the polarity/properties of magnets - Investigation of the compass (historical and modern uses) - Construction and use of electromagnets - Investigation of antique electric motors and construction of a simple motor - Generating electricity
